EllisDon's Carbon Impact Initiative in Improving Our World Posted by Best Access Doors - Canada on 7th Dec 2022

While we have forged ahead to create buildings and infrastructure for better lives, we still need to take care of our surroundings. This neglect has resulted in the ever-increasing severity of natural disasters in recent years. Without a significant change in how we operate, society as we know it will never be the same.

However, on December 2015, there was a historic change. For the first time in the Conference of Parties (COP), 196 countries in the COP21 meeting agreed to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to limit the temperature increase in this century to 2°C. In light of this, EllisDon recognized that the private sector would be responsible for meeting these changes and is the driving force behind establishing the "Low Carbon Agenda."

Importance of Infrastructure

As more developing countries continue to develop, it's inevitable for more cities to pop up and grow. Living in a city means you spend as much as 90% of your time indoors. With buildings being responsible for 40% of carbon emissions during their construction and the rest of their lifetime, buildings will be one of the primary drivers to reducing our carbon impact.

While it would be nice to use the latest and greatest technology to meet your sustainability goals, this is only possible in the construction industry with rigorous testing. In addition, the costs associated with adopting new technologies are reason enough for many companies to keep doing things as they always do.

Low Carbon Agenda

As one of Canada's industry leaders, the EllisDon Corporation understands that it will be hard for a single company to adapt to the changes of a Low Carbon Economy. For this reason, they have established the Low Carbon Agenda.

Essentially, this agenda allows market leaders from many industries to prepare a significant shift in how we conduct business. The society we've built allows for new technologies to emerge quickly, and it would be easier to take advantage of it all with the full cooperation of the public and private sectors. It also gives many other corporations proven data that you can run a profitable business while meeting sustainability and environmental responsibility targets.

Global Impact

The first step EllisDon's 'Low Carbon Agenda' is the "Carbon Impact Initiative." The initiative started with an EllisDon-facilitated workshop where industry leaders from the building and energy sectors discussed potential ways to reduce the carbon impact of buildings and infrastructure. They compiled the results into a single action plan to show the highlights of the meeting and present options on how to meet the targets set in COP21. We'll go over a few notable ones:

  • Pilot Projects

One of the best ways to set an example for the rest of the industry is by taking the first step. EllisDon completed this by combining their and their partners' resources and industry experience and pouring it into commercial projects. After construction, these buildings will be used for further testing to identify the merits and fix any weaknesses.

  • Carbon Accounting

To see the efficacy of these new technologies and practices, you'll need the tools to track greenhouse emissions to see if they meet the requirements of a net-zero carbon building. EllisDon will also be utilizing the GHG Protocol to measure the success of its initiative so that results are transparent and reproducible on a larger scale.

  • Rigorous Testing

Adopting new technologies in buildings and infrastructure requires time and patience. People often approach these technologies with skepticism as it's unknown how they will perform. One way to build confidence in these products is to show proof that the technology meets industry expectations through thorough testing.

  • Profitability

The last step in ensuring a sustainable future is for businesses to show their profitability. If the new low-carbon economy isn't giving returns to its investors, people will most likely shy away from it. EllisDon evaluates financing and investment strategies through the Carbon Impact Initiative and works closely with government agencies to ensure partners willing to invest in the low-carbon economy get the support they need.
